Rug Size Guide: Get the Right Size for Your Space

Before deciding between a cosy wool rug or an ultra-modern patterned rug, you’ll want to know what size you prefer. The size of your ideal rug will depend on where it’s going and what you want to do with the space. Do you want it to make a bold statement or blend in for a subtle effect? If your goal is to break up a room into different areas, using several smaller rugs can do the job beautifully. No matter the room or its purpose, our rug size guide is here to help you make the right decision when purchasing a new rug.

What size rug for living rooms?

For a lounge space, we typically recommend the standard size of 160 x 230cm. A rug this size will be big enough for a coffee table while maintaining a gap between the couch and the rug. If you would like your couch to be half on the rug, you will need to go for the next size up: 200 x 290cm.

If you have quite a large lounge space, we have two oversized options available: 240 x 330cm and 280 x 380cm.

What size rug for dining rooms?

For a dining room, our rug-size guide recommends getting one large enough to fit under the table. Placing a large rug under your dining table will help ground the furniture within the room, softening the room’s sound and introducing colour, pattern, and texture. For a standard 6-seater table, the most suitable rug is 200 x 290cm; this will be large enough for the table and chairs to fit on the rug comfortably. For 8-seaters or larger, you may need to look at oversized rugs. For a small table, 160 x 230cm is suitable.

The furniture around the room’s perimeter, such as sideboards and cupboards, is generally best left entirely off the rug, so you don’t have to worry about them when sizing your rug.

What size rug for bedrooms?

When it comes to the bedroom, rugs are best used underneath the bed, framing it but stopping before the bedside tables. Our rug size guide recommends getting a slightly larger rug than your bed. Using a rug in your bedroom will keep jack frost from nipping at your toes when you first jump out of bed.

Alternatively, you could also use two smaller rugs on either side of the bed rather than one large one, saving you money and creating a point of difference in your design.

What size rug for hallways?

For a hallway, our machine-made runners come in 67cm wide, 80cm wide and 100cm wide. We can cut these to your desired length and overlock the ends. We also have some ready-made pieces in 3m, 4m and 5m lengths. Our machine-made rug runners come in a variety of lengths that are sure to suit any home.
